Journal #5 - Hard News vs. Soft News

" The 7 Beauty Products Jennifer Aniston Absolutely Can't Live Without"

I believe that this article would definitely be considered "soft news" because it is not relevant to anyone, besides giving basic facts that may only interest someone who is looking for beauty products. "Soft news" is more personal information that does not relate to major issues.

"Spain Just Announced It Is Taking Control Over Catalonia"

I believe that this article would definitely be considered "hard news" because it is important to the world and has a great effect on the people. "Hard news" is serious news that interests/effects the world. (World issues.)

"Father Finds Long-Lost Twin Sons In Edmonton"

I believe that this article could be considered "hard news" but it could also be considered "soft news." This article pertains to more personal information, but it has a great effect. I would categorize this article as "soft news" because it really only effects the life of the father.

WikiLeaks and Whistleblowers

The topic that I have chosen to do my assignment on is the website The Intercept . This website allows people to share information with journalists while keeping it anonoymous. The Intercept consists of several jounalists who recieve people's information/issues unknowily. Over the years this website has won many awards for its outstanding skills and success.  This is a link where I found more information on said topic. I believe that The Intercept is doing things the right way and will continue to have a lot of success. I think that it is important for information to be anonomymous for privacy reasons. The only downfall with not knowing where the facts are coming from is journalists would not know whether the information is reliable/factual. This issue is relatable to everyone because anyone can share their facts and thoughts online with the journailsts. It is also relatable to journalists because it makes it easy for journalists to recieve information. Once again, I believe th...

Journal Entry #6 - Caught in Lies

"It Is Not All For The Show, Say no.... To The Fabricated News!" Yes, I believe that the news I hear/read/watch may be factually incorrect or fabricated because news reporters tend to inflate an occurring situation to make it more interesting. I thought the news articles were surprising, but after reading them and taking the time to understand things, it does not shock me to find out that professional journalists have fabricated news. I do agree with Shafer's assertion because liars do tend to make things up and convince themselves that what they are telling others is true news and that it is what they heard, but really it is what they have produced themselves. I strongly believe that colleagues and universities should make sure graduating journalism students can handle the responsibilities and pressures because clearly, they will need to use those skills in the real world. I believe these are necessities to being an exceptional journalist. I heavily agree that ...

Journal #4 - What is Newsworthy?

"Dalhousie University Homecoming Celebrations Lead To 22 Arrests." Here is the link Timing - 3/4. I gave this news article this score because this event happened on Sunday and the article was posted on Monday, October 16, 2017, two days after the event occurred. I believe they should have had it posted on Saturday night and/or Sunday morning, but maybe they do not publish on the weekends. Significance - 2.5/4. I believe this article only affects citizens who leave in the area that was affected by party goers and the board of Dalhousie University. Therefore, I do not believe it has a great significance. Proximity - 4/4. The geographical proximity for a Canadian reader is relatively close, making it interesting for Canadian readers because they recognize the location. Prominence - 2/4. The Dalhousie University students are prominent in the article, but not prominent to the world around us.  Human Interest - 2.5/4. This article would interest some, but not many in m...
